Minnie Pindar’s name reappears as Minnie Gilmore in a 1952 marriage license to Scotty Eckford, a union organizer of Black hotel employees in New York City. Mr. Eckford was also the uncle of Elizabeth Eckford, the American civil rights activist who made history in 1957 when she enrolled in the all-white Little Rock Central High School and attended class. Her younger son, Cleveland Gilmore, was 2 on that unseasonably warm November night in 1929. As an adult, he never talked about rent parties, or life in Harlem at all. He would tell us little things, like how he would buy watermelon for a nickel, but I never knew about his family.”The elder Mr. Gilmore died of a brain aneurysm in 2004, when Amir was 14.

Now, a landmark settlement with the National Association of Realtors is poised to upend this model. According to consumer advocates, and even some Realtors, it's a win for homebuyers and sellers. And in the months following Covid-19 pandemic reopenings, the hottest U.S. real estate markets were tipped squarely in favor of sellers. It's the same amount of money, but now the buyer gets money instead of a buyer agent, and they can decide what to do with it." What's more, greater competition for clients is likely to result in lower costs across the board, said Ryan Tomasello, a real estate industry analyst with the Keefe, Bruyette & Woods financial firm.

Mortgage rates rose slightly last week, but that did not seem to deter homebuyers who have come back after the holidays. Mortgage applications to purchase a home rose 8% last week compared with the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association's seasonally adjusted index. Demand, however, was still 18% lower than the same week one year ago, when rates were lower. "Mortgage rates increased slightly last week, but there continues to be an upward trend in purchase activity," said Joel Kan, an MBA economist, in a release. Mortgage rates moved higher at the start of this week, although there appears to be no particular reason for the increase.

British oil giant Shell on Thursday reported $6.2 billion profit for the third quarter, roughly in line with estimates, as the company benefited from higher oil prices and refining margins. Profit was higher than the $5.1 billion of the second quarter, but marked a sharp decline from the $9.45 billion reported a year ago, when the Russia-Ukraine conflict bolstered oil and gas prices. The company also announced a $3.5 billion share buyback to be carried out over the next three months. Free cash flow fell from $12.1 billion in the second quarter to $7.5 billion. BP on Tuesday posted a year-on-year fall in third-quarter profit from $8.15 billion to $3.293 billion, below analyst estimates, though France's TotalEnergies slightly outperformed last week.

Inflation in the United States has unquestionably cooled after hitting 40-year highs last year. Other key inflation gauges, the more comprehensive Personal Consumption Expenditures price index and the wholesale-focused Producer Price Index, have moderated as well. A spike in gas prices and other components such as persistently high shelter costs have kept inflation elevated. Rite Aid filed plans to close 154 stores on Monday as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Rite Aid is the smallest of the three major drugstore chains, well behind CVS and Walgreens. Rite Aid was expected to close stores as part of its bankruptcy. Rite Aid told Insider that it considers a variety of factors when deciding to close a store, "including business strategy, lease and rent considerations, local business conditions and viability, and store performance." "We will also strive to transfer associates to other Rite Aid locations where possible," the company said.

"You see all these high-level headline numbers, and those numbers don't jibe with your economic reality," said Elizabeth Crofoot, senior economist at labor analytics firm Lightcast. Higher prices have been one problem. Are the jobs numbers really that good? Beyond the housing costs, there's some evidence that the jobs numbers may not be all they're cracked up to be, either. After all, more than a quarter of the job creation for September came from lower-wage occupations in the leisure and hospitality industry.

Other central and eastern EU countries have also put up border controls inside what is normally a zone of open travel, citing the need to crack down on people smugglers and migrants who avoid regular border crossings and arrival procedures. But the matter is politically sensitive and anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies are on the rise in some EU countries ahead of continent-wide European Parliament elections next June. From economic aid transfers to decision-making to maintaining cohesion, EU leaders will look on Friday at what needs to change inside their union to allow for another enlargement. Such debates highlight a tough dilemma the EU faces in trying to bring in new members while deepening existing integration. "Enlargement is a geo-strategic investment in peace, security, stability and prosperity ... both the EU and future member states need to be ready."

Cecilia Maes, the superintendent of Alhambra Elementary School District, near Great Hearts Christos’s Phoenix location, has no shortage of ideas of what she could do with more money: Give raises to teachers. “In public schools, we are committed to every child who walks through our doors, regardless of the challenges,” Dr. Maes said, echoing critics who say that children with the fewest resources and highest needs tend to be left out of the school choice frenzy. Patrick Wolf, a University of Arkansas professor who studies school choice and has supported vouchers, said that expanding eligibility “pulls in a broader customer base,” which builds political support. Steve Perez, a 38-year-old mortgage loan officer who says he is politically independent, will use vouchers to send four children to Great Hearts Christos. “What parent wouldn’t,” he asked, “given this opportunity, choose what they believe to be a superior education if they can?”

The parents of Tyre Nichols and the man who disarmed the suspected Monterey Park shooter have been invited to attend President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address Feb. 7. The brutal beating of Nichols by Memphis police and the mass shooting at a dance hall in Monterey Park, California, this month have renewed calls for policing and gun control measures. But only an hour after she spoke with Tsay, the president himself asked Tsay to be his guest, Chu said. TODAYThe president spoke with Nichols’ parents and Tsay in the wake of the tragedies. Jan 26 (Reuters) - Los Angeles-area investigators have found no connection between the victims of a mass shooting at a Monterey Park, California, dance hall and the elderly man who carried out the massacre last weekend, authorities said. On Monday, a gunman killed seven people at two mushroom farms in the coastal Northern California city of Half Moon Bay. Investigators did find a motorcycle registered to the suspect parked one block from the dance hall. After carrying out the shooting at the dance hall, Tran drove a short time later to a second dance hall in Alhambra, where that club's operator disarmed him before he could open fire. He purchased that gun in 1999 but it was not registered with the state of California, Luna said.
SAN GABRIEL, Calif. — The elderly gunman responsible for the dance hall massacre in Monterey Park was out of step with other Asian immigrants who found joy and companionship in venues like the Star Ballroom Dance Studio, former friends said. “His ex-wife also likes to dance, so, many times, they would bump into each other in the party or at events. I don’t think his ex-wife was the cause of his massacre.”Nevertheless, Tran often blamed his ex-wife for the demise of his trucking business. Records show that Tran registered a business called Tran’s Trucking in Monterey Park in 2002 and that it was dissolved two years later. He also recalled seeing a white van parked on the modest property, not unlike the one in which Tran died.
HALF MOON BAY/MONTEREY PARK, California, Jan 24 (Reuters) - America was supposed to be a place of safety for Jose Romero when he arrived some two years ago to work on a California farm alongside other immigrants from Mexico and China. Romero was killed on Monday, shot dead by a gunman along with six other farm workers in Half Moon Bay, just south of San Francisco. Antonio Perez, who now lives in Half Moon Bay after moving from Mexico in 1983, said he feels stuck between cartel violence in his homeland and gun violence in the United States. “What a tragedy.”People gather for a candlelight vigil after a mass shooting during Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations in Monterey Park, California, U.S. January 24, 2023. About 9.3% of Asian immigrants keep guns in their homes in California, compared with 5.6% of Latino immigrants and 12% of white immigrants, said Ninez Ponce, the lead researcher on the UCLA study.

Two days before the Half Moon Bay killings, another gunman 380 miles to the south opened fire at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio, a club frequented mostly by older patrons of Asian descent in Monterey Park.
