Mortgage rates rose slightly last week, but that did not seem to deter homebuyers who have come back after the holidays. Mortgage applications to purchase a home rose 8% last week compared with the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association's seasonally adjusted index. Demand, however, was still 18% lower than the same week one year ago, when rates were lower. "Mortgage rates increased slightly last week, but there continues to be an upward trend in purchase activity," said Joel Kan, an MBA economist, in a release. Mortgage rates moved higher at the start of this week, although there appears to be no particular reason for the increase.

Profit was higher than the $5.1 billion of the second quarter, but marked a sharp decline from the $9.45 billion reported a year ago, when the Russia-Ukraine conflict bolstered oil and gas prices. The company also announced a $3.5 billion share buyback to be carried out over the next three months. Free cash flow fell from $12.1 billion in the second quarter to $7.5 billion. BP on Tuesday posted a year-on-year fall in third-quarter profit from $8.15 billion to $3.293 billion, below analyst estimates, though France's TotalEnergies slightly outperformed last week.

On Monday, a gunman killed seven people at two mushroom farms in the coastal Northern California city of Half Moon Bay. Investigators did find a motorcycle registered to the suspect parked one block from the dance hall. After carrying out the shooting at the dance hall, Tran drove a short time later to a second dance hall in Alhambra, where that club's operator disarmed him before he could open fire. He purchased that gun in 1999 but it was not registered with the state of California, Luna said.
